How to Change the Wheels on the VW Golf and Jetta
Models covered are Volkswagen Golf and Jetta Mk 2 models with petrol engines, including fuel injection, catalytic converter, 16-valve and special/limited edition models 1043 cc, 1272 cc, 1595 cc and 1781 cc. This refers to the Service and Repair Manual which was published in 1997.
Below are the procedures for changing the wheels of the VW Golf and Jetta cars:
- The spare wheels and tools are stored in the luggage compartment. Release the retaining strap and lift out the jack and tools from the centre of the wheel.
- Unscrew the retaining nut and lift the wheel out of the vehicle.
- Remove the wheel trim or hub cap (some trims have retaining screws which must be undone first). Slacken each wheel bolt by half a turn.
- Locate the jack on firm ground below the reinforced point on the sill. Turn the jack handle to raise the vehicle until the wheel is clear of the ground.
- Unscrew the wheel bolts and remove the wheel. Fit the spare wheel and screw in the wheel bolts. Lightly tighten them using the wheel brace, then lower the car to the ground.
- After the car is on the ground, secure by tightening the wheel bolts in a diagonal pattern using the wheel brace. At the earliest possible opportunity, have the wheel bolts slackened and then tightened to the correct torque wrench setting.
